Reflections make our eyes focus on different planes at the same time. This sets up a puzzle: do you look at the melting ice crystals, or do you look at the reflections of the birch trees?

- are battling it out for territory   

Crows and ravens are clever birds who know a good thing when they come upon it. Each species puts spotters up in high places to keep on eye on what's going on. It gets lively when the spotters notice that there are intruders about.

Colorful Flags Represent Nations   

- whose military forces are serving at our international air base    

The Canadian flag flies highest, in the center. To the far right are the official flag of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the unofficial but widely used "spruce twig" tri-color flag of Labrador. From the left the flags of Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom represent their countries. We live in a colorful and cosmopolitan town.

Winter Branches

Red Osier Dogwood Branches  

- bright red lines in the wintertime

The red color of these branches stands out in the morning sunshine, and it looks especially bright against the sky and trees on the hill behind. The abstract composition of forked lines is minimalist, and compelling in its simplicity.

Flocks of migratory birds passed through here earlier this fall, stripping most of the wild fruit from the trees and bushes. However, some bird species stay here all year long, feeding on what is left on the trees, like these berries of the Red Osier Dogwood bush. Before the winter is over, even these bird-raisins will be eaten, and the birds will be foraging in some other trees.
