Fog

When cold air meets warmer air that holds moisture...  

...you get fog.   

Stripes of fog drift over the surface of the water and cling to the contours of the land. When there is little wind to disturb it, the fog rests in elongated bands of water vapour which add contrasting patterns and counterpoint to the forms of the mountains and islands.

Icebergs, Mountains and Fog

Why Do Icebergs Look So Much Like Mountains...  

...is it the fog?   

Forms taken by the frozen water of the icebergs seems to mimic the structures of the ancient rock of the Torngat mountains. And the fog adds drama to the scene.

In the Early Morning Sunshine...  

... the fog will dissipate soon.   

Coastal fog is something we usually see from sea level. Looking down on it, the fog looks like waves lapping at the shoreline. The helicopter view is remarkable.

Mist on the River 2

Mist on the River 2   - an  atmospheric effect in the distant landscape

In the distance, clouds of mist add definition to the river landscape. Currents of water are strong here and a great volume of cold water flows, condensing thick patches of fog and mist out of the warm, moist air. The mist rising from so far away adds to the drama of early morning light.

Mist on the River  - a localized atmospheric effect in the landscape

Morning mist on the river appears where relatively warm moist air churns against colder river water, causing the layer of air closest to the river to chill. Cool air cannot hold as much moisture as warm air, so the moisture in that chilled layer of air condenses into small particles of air-borne water, which we call mist or fog. The patchy mist drifts with the gentle wind current. The mist will gradually dissipate as the chilled air warms up with heat from the sun and is able to hold more moisture again.

Fog and rain change the look of the landscape. The river stretches flat in the windless atmosphere and clouds obscure the tops of some of the hills on the other side. At the same time, the fog hides the bottoms of some more hills, and leaves the just the tops showing, revealing interesting forms in the distant hills that normally you don't get to see. It's worth getting wet to see it.

On a foggy November day, with late fall ice melting in the calm still air, I was enjoying driving over a new bridge on a new highway.
I suddenly felt disoriented.
After a moment, I realized why - this new road had brought me to a house I had stayed in many years before.
But I had gotten there by a different route and I was looking at it from a different angle than I was used to.
I pulled off the side of the road to enjoy the experience.
