Commitment: the state of being emotionally impelled to do something. My commitment is to making art, loving life and doing well.

Daily Artworks... my continuing challenge for 2015: Observe and record. Record and observe. And stretch - s-t-r-e-t-c-h - myself.
What will I discover?

Torngats 2015 - Where Nature and Culture Connect 20

Wake and Wash

The Wake and Wash of a Small Craft...
...are the footprints of where we went.

Every day at the Base Camp we went out to explore the park. Most days we went out in speedboat, zodiac or passenger boat. Behind us we left a mark of wherever we went, our wake of disturbed water behind the boat and our wash of splashed water, waves and foam. Unlike our footprints on the land, our watery tracks were erased by the sea after only a few minutes.

Birches and their Neighbors - Day 28

Tracks Left By a Mourning Dove

A path in the snow
- with a cone from a tamarack tree

Easily identified by its long tapering tail, and light beige coloring, the Mourning Dove is a common sight in tree branches and on telephone wires. The name "mourning dove" comes from the birds' long-drawn-out coo-coo-coo call that has been described as sounding like a lament.
The Mourning Dove's diet is mostly small seeds, which the birds peck from the ground, moving quickly to hunt for more food and avoid predators. But they don't stay on the ground for long, zooming back to their secure perches again. These tracks are the evidence that they have been here.

Crisp Morning 2

Crisp Morning 2 - ripple patterns indicate a slight breeze

It's a crisp morning, with a slight breeze coming from upstream on this quiet river channel. The golden early-morning sunlight looks warm, but its appearance is deceptive, and today you will want your gloves, or else you are going to jam your hands into your coat pockets as you walk along in the open.

Crisp Morning

Crisp Morning - cooler temperatures kept yesterday's snow on the ground

Yesterday's snow has stayed on the ground, gleaming white in the early morning light. Yesterday's footprints are still visible, too, the tracks of joggers' sneakers and dog-walkers' hiking boots, the paw prints of dogs, rabbits, squirrels and other creatures too small to be seen. Birds, too. This part of the riverbank is a busy spot, but you're only aware of it when you can spot the tracks left on the ground. Snow is good for that.
