Commitment: the state of being emotionally impelled to do something. My commitment is to making art, loving life and doing well.

Daily Artworks... my continuing challenge for 2015: Observe and record. Record and observe. And stretch - s-t-r-e-t-c-h - myself.
What will I discover?

Everything Looks Different at Night - Day 31

"Daylight" at Dusk - Moon Through Trees

Time Exposure of the Moon Through Trees
- turns the evening into "daylight."

A 20 second time exposure with low ISO and medium f-stop delivers enough light to the camera sensor to make dusk appear to be daylight, and turns the moon into a softly glowing sun.

Everything Looks Different at Night - Day 18

Birch Tree Bark in Floodlight

Floodlight Accentuates the Shadows
- and brings out the texture of birch bark on the tree trunk.

The floodlights are close to this tree. The highlights and shadows from the floodlights makes the texture of the birch bark and the form of the tree stand out in the darkness.

Everything Looks Different at Night - Day 16

Buds and Branches in the Streetlight

Springtime Buds and Branches
- lit by the orange glow of a streetlight.

Trees that grow around streetlights have the benefits and disadvantages of two different light sources - sunlight in the daytime and streetlight at night. For a passerby, the nighttime lighting seems more dramatic.

Everything Looks Different at Night - Day 9

Shadows at Night

Is It Strange to See Shadows at Night
- wrapping around the cylindrical form of the tree trunks?

Cast shadows are created when an object blocks light from reaching an area that is lit by a light source. The criss-crossed shadows on these tree trunks were made by the branches that stand between  the floodlights and the trees that they are spotlighting.

Everything Looks Different at Night - Day 3

Early Crescent Moon Through Trees

The Early Crescent Phase of the Moon
-  rises through bare tree branches

A familiar crescent moon shines through a stand of trees. No leaves are sprouting yet, and the bare branches and tree trunks are silhouettes against the rich dark blue sky of dusk.

Everything Looks Different at Night - Day 2

Porch Light

Light from Indoors at Night
-  invites you inside

Everything looks different at night. Warm lighting from inside the porch contrasts the adventures of being outdoors after dark with all of the comforts of being cozy indoors. It's good to get home.

Everything Looks Different at Night - Day 1

Floodlighting on Trees

A Stand of Trees at Night
-  floodlighting highlights textures and cylindrical forms

Everything looks different at night. Artificial night light changes from location to location, and turns ordinary scenes into the unfamiliar. The floodlighting hitting these trees gives an orange glow to the trunks, and the low angle of the light picks out the textures of the bushes and underbrush.

Seeing What's Not There - Day 29

Multiple Reflections in a Window

Multiple Layers of Glass in a Window
-  give multiple reflections

Reflections are what we see when light rays hit off a shiny surface and bounce back to our eyes. In an insulated window, multiple layers of glass provide many surfaces for bright light to reflect the scene behind the viewer, and provide ghostly triple and quadruple images.

Seeing What's Not There - Day 27

Springtime Reflections from Outdoors

It's Cozy Inside
-  but there is work to do outdoors on a sunny day

Bright sunlight shows up the places where raking needs to be done and things stored for the winter need to be put back into place. Springtime sunshine wakes up plants and people alike.

Seeing What's Not There - Day 25

Curved Reflections

Reflections in an Automobile Window
-  show the curvature of the glass

Even without being polished to a high gloss, car windows reflect their surroundings in a distorted mirror image. Because the window is also transparent, you can see some objects through the glass as well, depending on how your eye adjusts to light and dark and to the focusing distance.

Seeing What's Not There - Day 23

Reflections on a Wooden Deck

A Series of Reflections in Tiny Pools of Rainwater
-  on the wooden planks of a backyard deck

The focusing distance of the reflection is much farther away from the camera than the focusing distance of the wooden deck at my feet. This sets up a strange in-focus and out-of-focus conflict for a viewer's eyes, which is only resolved when the viewer's brain says: "We are looking at the trees."

Snowy Contours

Snowy Contours - velvety textures from many snowy trees

Source photo

These hills beside the river are thick with uniformly sized and shaped black spruce trees, and the branches of every tree are heavy-laden with deep mounds of snow. Close-up the trees are a dramatic contrast of black, dark green and white shapes, but in the distance, their collective surface softens and the trees define the contours of the terrain.

Crisp Morning 2

Crisp Morning 2 - ripple patterns indicate a slight breeze

Source photo
It's a crisp morning, with a slight breeze coming from upstream on this quiet river channel. The golden early-morning sunlight looks warm, but its appearance is deceptive, and today you will want your gloves, or else you are going to jam your hands into your coat pockets as you walk along in the open.

Crisp Morning

Crisp Morning - cooler temperatures kept yesterday's snow on the ground

Source photo
Yesterday's snow has stayed on the ground, gleaming white in the early morning light. Yesterday's footprints are still visible, too, the tracks of joggers' sneakers and dog-walkers' hiking boots, the paw prints of dogs, rabbits, squirrels and other creatures too small to be seen. Birds, too. This part of the riverbank is a busy spot, but you're only aware of it when you can spot the tracks left on the ground. Snow is good for that.
