Close Up and Personal - Day 24

Red Wine Glass in Sunshine

Red Wine Glass in Sunshine
- reflections and refractions in direct light

One of my grandmother's treasures was her full table set of Portuguese cut glass, which included everything from thumb-sized sherry and port glasses to full size water goblets, with jugs and sherbet cups to match.
My favorites were always the red wine goblets, with their distinct color contrasts and well defined patterns. They always looked beautiful, and they still do.

How lovely! That rich ruby red!

In the photo, I am intrigued by the velvety grayness of the backdrop and then the patterns and reflections on the fabric. Tricks of the light?

Hi Barbara:

Backdrop = large sheet of water-color paper taped to window and semi-opaque in the sunshine

Fabric = a damask-type table runner, with a woven pattern that changes as the angle of the light changes

Reflections and refractions on the fabric = mostly from the stem of the glass acting as a prism in the direct sunshine coming from the side. If you look closely you can see a hint of tiny rainbows in the shadow on the magenta fabric near the bottom of the photograph.

Thanks for asking! :) - M.

OH! yes, I do see the little rainbow prismatic peeking out now that you mentioned it. that backdrop is allowing some light through, then? I never in a million years would have realized there was a window there.
